The award supports Dr. Alter’s project, “SharpFocus Stimulation to Treat Fibromyalgia Pain in Women,” which aims to address the pressing need for novel, noninvasive therapies for fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition that disproportionately affects women.

Dr. Lin’s project supports the expansion of a surgical airway simulation workshop from Passavant to other UPMC hospitals to inform the development of MediSimScale, a toolkit that will streamline the process for scaling simulation training by collecting efficacy and dissemination outcome data.

Spearheaded by principal investigator Heather Margonari, DNP, FNP-BC, the project will be conducted in collaboration with Drs. Jacques Chelly and Shiv Goel.

Our department held its first annual Research Retreat, offering an opportunity for department members to explore diverse research projects, access valuable departmental resources, and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.

In Science, Benedict Alter, MD, PhD, offers his perspective on a new research study from University of Turin Medical School where investigators have “reverse engineered” the placebo effect, potentially unveiling new pathways to treat chronic pain.

Keith M. Vogt, MD, PhD, FASA, and co-authors James W. Ibinson, MD, PhD, Courtney N. Kozdron, and Marcus A. Simmons, MD, have been awarded First Place for their abstract at ISAP 2024 Annual Meeting.

Dr. Sadhasivam was accepted into the FAER Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology, joined the Magee-Womens Research Institute, and was appointed Associate Dean for Perioperative Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Their innovative study aims to address the complex interplay between socioeconomic factors and obstetric anesthesia care for patients with opioid use disorder.

Dr. Subramanian received the SCA's Participant User File award for his research project "Association Effects of Social Determinants of Health on Complications After VAD Implantation: Exploration of the ZIP Code and Outcomes."

Dr. Senthil Sadhasivam will serve as the lead contact principal investigator for the grant, which will support a pioneering research project aimed at transforming pain management for children undergoing major surgeries.
