The University of Pittsburgh Departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine are pleased to offer the UPMC Combined Anesthesiology Pediatrics Residency. At the end of this five-year program, residents are eligible to become board-certified in both general pediatrics and general anesthesiology.

This residency program is ideally suited for the applicant who is dedicated to the care of pediatric patients and also desires a solid foundation in anesthesiology. Training in this pathway combines the core ACGME requirements for both residencies, which places the resident in a distinctive position to craft a career that best suits their aspirations. After residency, candidates typically pursue further training in pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric emergency medicine, or pediatric pain medicine. Given the breadth in training, career opportunities are plentiful. Residents are highly sought after by fellowship programs throughout the country and would be well positioned for careers in education, research, advocacy, and leadership.

Program leaders include Program Director Lieu Tran, MD, and Associate Program Director Peter J. Davis, MD, who are both certified in both pediatrics and anesthesiology. Drs. Tran and Davis are closely supported by Associate Director Rhett Lieberman, MD, from the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. This rigorous academic program has complete and enthusiastic support and resources from both categorical residencies in Anesthesiology and Pediatrics and from both the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Combined residents in our departments are afforded the same benefits that anesthesiology and pediatric residents enjoy. These include a competitive salary, vacation time, meeting time, comprehensive health insurance, a travel and education discretionary account, a separate book fund, and convenient parking. The combined program is in full compliance with ACGME graduate medical trainee duty hours regulations.
