About UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital

"The front of Magee-Womens Hospital on a sunny day"UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital (MWH) is a world-class center for both women’s health and comprehensive medical-surgical care and a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, one of the first recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Multidisciplinary teams consisting of specialists in neonatology, genetics, ultrasound, and maternal-fetal medicine help women achieve successful pregnancies at MWH. The hospital serves as a teaching facility for obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and neonatology for the University of Pittsburgh. Members of the medical staff hold academic appointments at the university and are actively involved in education, research, and patient care.

MWH is also an American Society for Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, performing close to 1,000 surgical treatments for morbid obesity each year. OB Anesthesiology Fellows can learn the anesthetic techniques required for the bariatric patient in the general operating room.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The MWH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) annually treats more than 1,800 babies who need a little more medical attention after birth. The NICU is staffed by highly-trained neonatal specialists and is equipped with 77 beds, consisting of 48 private bays, three open-bed pods, and one eight-bed Level III unit, making it the largest NICU in the country with private bays that utilize solid walls instead of glass or curtains.

Families are invited to enjoy Austin's Playroom at the NICU, a bright and friendly play area built with a generous gift from Nathalie Lemieux and the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

OB anesthesiology fellows spend an exclusive two-week rotation on the unit with NICU physicians and staff in the first three months of the fellowship. The experience provides for an appreciation on the part of the fellow for the care of expectant mothers for whom they may ultimately provide anesthesia.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

"A hand holding a baby's foot"MWH’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine offers care from some of the leading national and international experts in preterm birth and high-risk pregnancy research. MWH is the primary site for high risk OB care for the tristate area of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Maternal-fetal medicine sub-specialists provide comprehensive high-risk pregnancy care. This care includes preconception consultation for women planning pregnancy who may have high-risk concerns all the way through the labor and delivery period and postpartum care.

OB Anesthesiology fellows spend an exclusive two-week rotation with the maternal fetal medicine service on the antenatal and postnatal units, where fellows are introduced to antenatal surveillance methodologies.
