Medical Student Research

Summer and Longitudinal Research Opportunities

Medical students from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) have several opportunities to engage in research in our department. We are glad to host UPSOM students for summer research experiences as part of the Pitt-Med Research Experience for Pre-matriculants (PREP) program as well as the Dean’s Summer Research Project. Additionally, we have hosted many Pitt medical student Longitudinal Research Projects. Dr. Keith Vogt is our contact for medical student research. Clinical shadowing opportunities can also be coordinated as part of these experiences.

Trainees interested in research opportunities in our department should complete our Trainee Research Application Form.

Highly motivated medical students from other US-based training programs who are interested in engaging in summer or longitudinal research with investigators in our department are encouraged to apply for the FAER-sponsored MSARF program below. Nearly all projects would require in-person activities with a minimum 3-month commitment. Our department does not typically sponsor work/educational visas for research positions.

A database list of ongoing and future projects is maintained by the UPSOM.

FAER Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) created the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) program to encourage talented medical students to consider careers in anesthesiology research. We regularly serve as a host site for FAER MSARF fellows, which are typically medical students in the summer between first and second year, but this can also support two-month research rotations during other times in training. MSARF positions are available to medical students from outside institutions and to support University of Pittsburgh medical students as well. The MSARF program offers an eight-week anesthesiology-related research experience, includes a stipend, covers some travel costs, and provides the opportunity to present at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting. The MSARF also includes the opportunity to shadow a practicing anesthesiologist, intensivist, or pain physician.

To apply to this competitive program, please visit the FAER MSARF website.

Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD)

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is an NIH-funded, multi-institutional training program between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The MSTP offers exceptionally talented individuals the opportunity to undertake a physician-scientist training program tailored to their specific research interests. The MSTP serves as a bridge between the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and 22 graduate programs at either Pitt or CMU.

Current Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine MSTP faculty research mentors include:

MSTP students interested in pursuing basic or translational research within our department should reach out to the principal investigators directly to discuss a lab rotation during the first two years of MSTP training.

MSTP Longitudinal Clinical Clerkship

All MSTP students considering pursuing residency training in anesthesiology are welcome to conduct their required Longitudinal Clinical Clerkship (LCC) with a physician-scientist mentor in our department. Interested students can contact individual department faculty members directly or are welcome to direct questions about the LCC to Dr. Keith Vogt.
