Congratulations to Jacques E. Chelly, MD, PhD, MBA, who was awarded a grant from Beekley Medical to assess the role of “Aromatherapy for Perioperative Management of Anxiety.” The study, which will be conducted as a single-center, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at UPMC Shadyside, will explore aromatherapy’s potential to modulate perioperative anxiety. Anxiety has been established as a factor that negatively impacts post-operative recovery, including pain and opioid requirement. The demonstration that aromatherapy may reduce perioperative level of anxiety will lead to further research aimed to establish its mechanism of action at the central nervous system level.
