Message from the Chief Residents

Group photo of the chief residents, Doctors Nahouraii, Thompson, and YinHello, everyone! Welcome to the UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine website. We could not be more excited to tell *yinz*about our fantastic department.

We have 20-22 anesthesiology residents per year who rotate through half a dozen hospitals in Pittsburgh alone, and many others are available for rotations throughout Western Pennsylvania and across the world. Despite housing such a large anesthesiology center, our department remains exceptionally close-knit. Our residents come from all over the world, bringing together a powerfully diverse and well-rounded group. Our faculty remain heavily involved in our successes and are engaged in our learning both inside and outside of the operating room.

Pittsburgh is a wonderful place to live. None of us chiefs are from the Pittsburgh area, yet we all ended up here because of the wonderful people who surround us. The city has all the amenities of a large metropolitan area with a hometown feel. There is always something to do here, whether it be some sort of festival, live concert, or major sporting event. The opportunities are endless! Fun fact: Picklesburgh was recently ranked the top specialty food festival in the U.S. Yes, we have a whole festival dedicated to pickles here! If that can’t convince you to join our program, then we don’t know what will.

In all seriousness, Pitt has been an incredible place to train, and we are so thankful to the program and amazing people who have helped mold us into skillful and caring anesthesiologists. We don’t know if you will find a department filled with people as kindhearted as those here. We hope you will consider our program for your training.

All the best,

Lauren Nahouraii, MD
