The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health has notified us that our National Research Service Award Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) will be continuously funded for a fourth five-year term, with an increase of training slots from three to four positions beginning July 1, 2022.

A paper from the labs of Yan Xu, PhD, and Pei Tang, PhD, in partnership with collaborators at Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, and Shanghai Jiaotong University, was published this month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They were recognized for their abstract “Preclinical Evaluation of a Novel Glycinergic Analgesic for Treatment of Chronic Pain in Rodents.”

The University’s recognition is a reflection of our department and our T32 program’s commitment and contribution to the university’s diversity efforts.

The Journal of General Physiology research news article “Propofol’s paradox, explained” spotlights a publication on work from the labs of Yan Xu, PhD, and Pei Tang, PhD.

"Structural basis of neurosteroid anesthetic action on GABA(A) receptors" was published in the renowned open-access journal Nature Communications.

Yan Xu, PhD, was appointed the Peter Winter Professor of Anesthesiology. This endowed professorship is named in honor of Peter M. Winter, MD, the renowned second chair of our department.

The program, entitled “Research Training in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine,” is directed by Professor Yan Xu, PhD, Vice Chair of Basic Sciences.

Dr. Xu will present three lectures during his visit: “Systemic Immune Modulations of Neuronal Injuries after Cardiac Arrest and Resuscitation,” “RELIEPH: a New Approach to Treating Chronic Pain,” and “Structure-based Drug Discovery and Glycine Receptor as a Therapeutic Target for Pain.”

The study theorizes that the process of consciousness and loss of consciousness under anesthesia can be likened to the flow of water through coffee grounds.
