UPMC Anesthesiology Residents Join the ASA-Lifebox Challenge

surgery in an OR

Our anesthesiology residents have taken on the ASA-Lifebox Resident Challenge! This annual competition pits anesthesiology residency programs in a friendly competition to raise funds for Lifebox, a global nonprofit dedicated to making surgery and anesthesia safer worldwide.

Lifebox was founded with the mission to close the pulse oximeter gap. So far, Lifebox has distributed over 35,000 pulse oximeters to anesthesia providers in need around the globe. Last year, Lifebox expanded its efforts by launching the Smile Train-Lifebox capnograph in collaboration with Smile Train to further enhance anesthesia safety. Overall, since its founding, Lifebox has helped make over 248 million surgeries safer.

By joining this challenge, we are showing our commitment to making safe anesthesia accessible to everyone, everywhere. We are asking for your support to help send pulse oximeters and capnographs to low-resource operating rooms worldwide.

Did You Know?

  • 5 out of 7 people lack true access to safe surgery.
  • 4 million people die annually from complications arising from surgery.
  • Half of these deaths are preventable.

Your donation can help change these dire statistics. Every contribution helps provide essential equipment to ensure safer surgeries and better outcomes and goes directly to support Lifebox. To learn more about Lifebox and their programs, visit lifebox.org.

To support our residents and Lifebox, please donate to "University of Pittsburgh Medical Center" on the Lifebox website. The first ten teams to bring in $2,000 in donations will be generously matched by the ASA Charitable Foundation, so don't wait. Together, we can help bring safe anesthesia to those who need it most.

Thank you for your generosity and support!
