The Magee Anesthesia Cares (MAC) Committee, comprised of dedicated Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital (Serafina Bear, MSN, CRNA; Clarice Hune, DNP, CRNA; Donna Koleck, MSN, CRNA; and Leanne Walker, MSN, CRNA), along with their family members and friends, recently came together to support two impactful community events.
On October 27-28, the Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh Free Dental, Hearing, and Vision Clinic unfolded at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. This initiative aimed to provide essential services to underserved community members lacking insurance or affordable dental care access. Local healthcare professionals, including the MAC team, collaborated with a robust coalition of 1,434 volunteers, ensuring all services were delivered free of charge, without eligibility or insurance prerequisites.
The event drew over 1,500 individuals of all ages seeking assistance. Such was the demand that some patients arrived as early as 11:15 on Thursday night, enduring a nearly seven-hour wait for the doors to open. The MAC team played a pivotal role, contributing to pre-event setup, medical triage, exit interviews, and acting as ambassadors to guide attendees to the necessary stations. CBS News Pittsburgh covered the event, highlighting the significant impact on the community. You can support the Mission of Mercy by donating online.
In another heartwarming display of compassion, the MAC team participated virtually to raise funds for the JDRF One Walk, which also took place on October 28, 2023. To date, the walk has garnered over $350,000, empowering further research and bolstering advocacy and support for individuals living with type 1 diabetes. You can contribute to the walk's cause online and be a part of this journey.
