John O’Donnell Inducted as Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing

"Headshot of John O'Donnell"Congratulations to John O’Donnell DrPH, CRNA, FAAN, FAANA, FSSH, who was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) at the October 2022 American Academy of Nursing Health Policy Conference. 

The FAAN designation is the highest honor in academic nursing and is awarded for significant contributions to the profession. According to Academy President Kenneth R. White, PhD, RN, AGACNP, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN, “… the Academy is thrilled to welcome these dynamic and courageous nurse leaders who will support our collective vision of healthy lives for all people. Induction in the Academy is a powerful moment in a nurse’s career. I look forward to celebrating each Fellow’s incredible accomplishments that have improved the well-being of communities across the globe.”

Dr. O’Donnell has been a CRNA since 1991 and Director of the University of Pittsburgh Nurse Anesthesia Program since 1994 and is the founding Chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia (2012). A full Professor in the School of Nursing at the University, he led the program to a top-10 ranking by US News and World Report every year since 1998 (the first year of rankings). He achieved three consecutive citation-free accreditation visits from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and serves on the COA Board of Directors and Executive Committee as Vice President and as Senior Associate Director of the Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER). As part of his simulation work, he serves on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the International Society for Simulation in Healthcare and consults nationally and internationally in the areas of simulation design, research, accreditation, and faculty development.
