From January 19–25, 2025, we celebrated National CRNA Week, an annual event recognizing the dedication, teamwork, and expertise of the nearly 74,000 certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) across the United States. These highly trained professionals provide exceptional care for patients during their most vulnerable moments. With over 400 CRNAs in our department, we proudly celebrated their invaluable contributions to UPMC and the communities we serve.
True to tradition, our CRNAs marked the week with events that highlighted their commitment to education, community service, and collaboration.
UPMC Presbyterian Family Day
CRNAs at UPMC Presbyterian kicked off the week with a “Family Day” event on January 19, welcoming over 300 attendees to explore the operating room and learn about the vital role of CRNAs. Families and staff enjoyed a day filled with hands-on education and an inside look at the daily work of nurse anesthetists. The event, organized by Julie Dixon-Ernst and Anna Gombar, was supported by an enthusiastic team of Pitt SRNAs and medical students. The enthusiasm and engagement of attendees made the event both memorable and meaningful.

Supporting Oncology Patients at UPMC Passavant
CRNAs at UPMC Passavant dedicated their CRNA Week activities to making a difference in the lives of oncology patients by raising funds for the Passavant Foundation Cancer Care Fund. This vital resource helps provide basic necessities such as shelter, food, and transportation to patients undergoing cancer treatment. Through their efforts, UPMC Passavant CRNAs demonstrated their unwavering commitment to supporting both their patients and the broader community during times of need.
Giving Back at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital
On January 22, CRNAs at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital held a dinner and donation drive for the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, supporting survivors of domestic violence. Ten CRNA volunteers prepared meals and collected essential items, including gift cards for Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree, Giant Eagle, and Visa, enabling flexibility to address urgent needs. This effort, organized by Serafina Bear, MSN, CRNA, and Donna Koleck, MHS, CRNA, exemplifies the compassion and dedication of the Magee Anesthesia Cares (MAC) Committee.

Tailgate Night at UPMC Shadyside
On January 30, UPMC Shadyside CRNAs hosted a tailgate-themed dinner at Family House, a Pittsburgh nonprofit that provides affordable accommodations for patients and families seeking medical care. This event offered warmth and nourishment to families during their medical journeys. The event was organized by Tera Thomas, MSN, CRNA, and Melissa Aretz, MSN, CRNA.
Supporting Families at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
CRNAs at UPMC Children’s Hospital provided snack baskets throughout the week to parents and families in waiting areas of Same Day Surgery, the pediatric, neonatal, and cardiac intensive care units, and the North Outpatient Surgery Center. Looking ahead, Salina Torgerson, DNP, CRNA, planned a Valentine’s Day breakfast for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, to be prepared and served by CRNAs on February 15. These efforts reflect the commitment of our CRNAs to bringing comfort to families during challenging times.

Honoring Excellence and Commitment
National CRNA Week 2025 was a vibrant celebration of the exceptional work and dedication of CRNAs and SRNAs. From educating the public and serving the community to expressing gratitude for colleagues, the week highlighted the profound impact of nurse anesthetists at UPMC and beyond.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our CRNAs for their tireless dedication and compassion, not only during CRNA Week but every day.
