Two women stand on either side of a table covered with a purple tablecloth that reads "UPMC Life Changing Medicine, Advanced Practice Providers." Behind the table is a display with a sign that says, "Your life-changing career starts here" and promotes opportunities for advanced practice providers. The table features medical training tools, including anatomical models and medical instruments. A balloon column in pink and white stands to the left, with large windows in the background revealing a parking lot and a partly cloudy sky.On December 4, 2024, UPMC Presbyterian certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) Erica Wiesen, MSN, CRNA, and Julia Dixon-Ernst, MSN, CRNA, showcased diverse career opportunities during the UPMC Pathways for Students Educational Career Event at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. Sponsored by UPMC Health Plan, the event introduced over 700 high school students to more than 40 career pathways available within UPMC, the region’s largest employer.

Erica and Julia engaged students with interactive presentations and hands-on conversations about their vital roles as CRNAs. Their approachable style and enthusiasm for the CRNA profession inspired students to consider the rewarding field of nurse anesthesia.

By simplifying complex concepts and demonstrating the compassion central to their practice, Erica and Julia highlighted the vital contributions of CRNAs in healthcare. Events like these are instrumental in fostering interest in health professions and helping to grow the next generation of nursing and healthcare leaders.
