We are very proud to share the news about two of our esteemed faculty members who recently achieved rank promotions. These physicians are distinguished leaders who have been making a tremendous impact in academic anesthesiology and advancing the mission of our department.
Erin A. Sullivan, MD, D.ABA, FASA, was promoted to Professor. Dr. Sullivan has earned many accolades and achievements in her field throughout her career. Just a few key highlights are her leadership as Chief of our Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Division over the past 15 years and now being promoted to the role of the Associate Vice Chair in the department. She was also the Program Director of our Adult Cardiothoracic Fellowship from 2002 through 2020. Dr. Sullivan has been appointed to several committees of professional societies like the SCA and ASA, and she serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and as an Oral Board Examiner and Senior Editor/Question Writer for the ABA Applied Examination. Previously, she served as a question writer for the ASA Self-Education and Evaluation Program and the ABA-ASA Joint Council on In-Training Examinations. Dr. Sullivan has authored or co-authored nearly 100 publications on her work, including an impressive 18 book chapters published in medical textbooks. Importantly, she holds prominent leadership positions in the ASA – Section Chair on Subspecialties for the ASA Division of Scientific Affairs and District IX Director for Pennsylvania on the ASA Board of Directors.
James W. Ibinson, MD, PhD, was promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Ibinson is Chief Anesthesiologist at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) and recently received the VAPHS Clinical Excellence Award. As a physician-scientist, he conducts research focusing on BOLD fMRI, fcMRI, pain processing, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, perioperative neurocognitive disorders, and regional anesthesiology. Dr. Ibinson’s research as principal investigator has been successfully funded by The Ohio State University, UPP, the Pitt Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the VA, and our department, and he is co-investigator on projects funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, National Institute of Aging, and the Department of Defense. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications on his work, including journal articles, book chapters, and scholarly abstracts. Dr. Ibinson is also very active as a mentor, academic advisor, and teacher in clinical education, research, and faculty development.
