We are pleased to announce that Ryan Ball, MD, FASE, has been appointed Chief Anesthesiologist at UPMC Passavant, stepping into the role on July 1, 2021 as Dr. Dan Sullivan steps down as previously announced to focus on safety and quality. Ryan has been serving as Interim Assistant Chief Anesthesiologist at UPMC Passavant since November 1, 2020.
Ryan earned both his BS and MD from the University of Kentucky. He completed his anesthesiology residency at UPMC, serving as Chief Resident in 2011, and continued to complete the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at UPMC the following year. Ryan joined our department’s faculty as an Assistant Professor and attending anesthesiologist at UPMC Presbyterian in 2012 and moved to join the clinical team at Passavant in 2013. He served as the Resident TEE Rotation Director while at Presby and continues to serve in this role at Passavant. Since 2016, Ryan has served as the ERAS Program Director/Champion at Passavant. In 2018, he was appointed a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). In 2020, he was inducted into the international business honor society Beta Sigma Gamma.
As Chief Anesthesiologist at Passavant, Ryan will provide site level leadership and management consistent with the overall mission of the department and coordinate the delivery of perioperative care in compliance with standards and regulations set forth by UPMC, the department, the Joint Commission, and other regulatory agencies. Other key responsibilities will include overall long-term staffing and scheduling, budget and revenue cycle management, resident and fellow training compliance, hospital peer review and credentialing, integration of Passavant anesthesiology services with hospital leadership and surgical services, and representing Passavant anesthesiology and the department at various meetings and in collaborative relationships with UPMC system leaders.
Ryan will work in partnership with Dr. Wende Goncz in her critical role as Clinical Director of Anesthesiology at Passavant, coordinating hospital-wide anesthesia services, managing the daily OR schedule, and fulfilling other significant clinical OR responsibilities.
