Congratulations to Marsha Ritter Jones, MD, PhD, who was awarded a Maximizing Investigators' Research Award (MIRA R35 grant) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences/National Institutes of Health for her project “Neuroimmune Signaling in Surgical Wound Healing and Modulation by Regional Anesthesia” The five-year grant starts August 1, 2023 and provides approximately $400,000 per year in funding.
In her newly funded study, Dr. Ritter Jones aims to advance our understanding of how sensory neurons and peripheral nerve blocks impact the healing of surgical incisions and how they could potentially lead to improved, personalized perioperative patient care. Impaired healing of surgical incisions is the second leading cause of chronic wound care in the post-acute setting and costs an estimated $7 billion annually.
