The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) Foundation awarded John O’Donnell, DrPH, CRNA, CHSE, FSSH, FAANA, FAAN, CHSE, with the prestigious John F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award during its 2024 Annual Congress, held from August 2-6 in San Diego. This award, named in honor of former AANA Executive Director John Garde, is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to nurse anesthesiology through clinical research. Dr. O’Donnell, professor and founding chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, has been a pivotal figure in advancing nurse anesthesiology education, particularly through the use of simulation in training. His work has greatly influenced both technical and non-technical skill development within the field, helping to elevate the University of Pittsburgh’s Nurse Anesthesia Program to one of the top programs in the nation, consistently ranked in the top 10 by U.S. News and World Report since 1998.
In addition to his role at the University of Pittsburgh, O’Donnell serves as the senior associate director of the Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER), where he leads the Research and Scholarship Committee and supports various simulation research initiatives. His distinguished career spans over four decades, during which he has been recognized multiple times, including being named Program Director of the Year by both the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists and AANA. Dr. O’Donnell’s commitment to research and education is further evidenced by his role as a Fellow of several prestigious organizations, including the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the American Academy of Nursing. Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the award, Dr. O’Donnell acknowledged the foundational role that research has played in his professional life and the support of his family, colleagues, and students.
