Congratulations to Gaurav Chauhan, MD, on being selected as a winner of the UPMC Physician Excellence Award – UPMC New Physician Excellence in Clinical Care. This award honors new physicians with one to three years of practice experience who demonstrate clinical excellence, contribute to UPMC’s shared clinical mission, achieve high practice standards, and display exceptional teamwork, engagement, and passion for medicine. Dr. Chauhan received several nominations for this award, highlighting the impact of his work, collaboration, and dedication.
Maria Stangrecki, RN, wrote in her nomination letter: “Dr. Chauhan's exceptional contributions and passion for medicine are blended together, as he is always striving to find new answers and alternatives to help patients with some of the most unusual circumstances that have challenged many previous care providers who had no other solutions to provide the patient.” She added that, “through his publications and papers available on the internet, patients from far and wide have sought Dr. Chauhan’s expertise in procedures not commonly done by most pain management physicians. He is always seeking answers for the "impossible” and believes there is always a solution and never gives up seeking that solution to help a patient in chronic pain.”
Carol Primola, RN, also highlighted Dr. Chauhan’s commitment to his patients and wrote: “I have been a nurse for over 48 years, the last 19 in chronic pain management. His skill set, techniques, and interventions are above and beyond, and he has made exceptional and significant contributions to our shared mission of caring for patients in chronic pain.”
Gaurav Chauhan, MD, FIPP, is dual board certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is an Assistant Professor and the Director of Neuromodulation in our Division of Chronic Pain Medicine. Dr. Chauhan completed medical school training at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital. Dr. Chauhan completed his residency in anesthesiology at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit where he was elected Chief Resident and awarded a FAER Scholarship. He completed fellowships at the University of Toronto (ambulatory anesthesiology) and Cleveland Clinic, Ohio (pain medicine). He earned his Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) certification from the World Institute of Pain.
Our University of Pittsburgh/UPMC Pain Management division is a multidisciplinary clinical, teaching, and research endeavor spread over several clinic locations. The division evaluates and treats every type of pain disorder and uses a multidisciplinary team approach to pain care that brings together dedicated professionals from various specialties, including anesthesiology, neurology, psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychology. The division’s clinicians provide pain treatment that recognizes the biological, psychological, and social factors that shape how every person experiences and manages their pain.
