We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Albert J. Carvelli, MD, to Chief of Anesthesiology at UPMC Mercy, effective October 1, 2024.
Dr. Carvelli graduated from Bucknell University with a BS in Biology and from the Medical College of Pennsylvania with his MD, both degrees earned with honors. He completed his anesthesiology residency and Pain Medicine Fellowship at UPMC. His anesthesiology career began at West Penn Hospital, and he later gained extensive experience across several institutions, including Allegheny General Hospital, Forbes Regional Hospital, and Westmoreland Regional Hospital, before joining our department at UPMC St. Margaret and UPMC Passavant in 2010. Dr. Carvelli is an exceptional clinician, widely respected for his leadership in the department. He has held numerous department leadership roles, including Co-Director of the St. Margaret Quality Improvement Committee and Director of our Regional Anesthesiology Fellowship Ambulatory Rotation. As a member of the department faculty Professional Practice Committee, he continues to guide our anesthesia and perioperative policies and practices.
As Chief Anesthesiologist at UPMC Mercy, Dr. Carvelli will oversee all clinical anesthesiology and perioperative care operations at the hospital, including staffing, scheduling, budget management, and resident/fellow training compliance. He will also participate in key leadership committees such as the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and the Mercy Joint Conference Committee.
