The Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC (MWH) anesthesiology division provides care outside of the main operating room and obstetrical suite. They often care for a special subset of patients dealing with cancer diagnoses. Patients with endometrial and cervical/uterine cancer often receive four to six treatments in the MWH Joint Radiation Oncology Center (JROC). Each treatment requires the administration of MAC anesthesia, for which a small number of CRNAs are rotated to this site to maintain continuity of care. This special bond between the CRNAs and the patients led Donna Dukes, CRNA to create something special. Donna and the MWH CRNAs purchased teal and white silicone bracelets with the slogan “KNOCK OUT CANCER” written in peach for their JROC patients. Cervical/uterine cancer awareness is represented by the colors teal and white and endometrial cancer is represented by the color peach. A bracelet is given to each patient when they receive their first treatment. The bracelets have been well received by the JROC patients and is an example of the many ways in which MWH anesthesiology goes above and beyond to provide excellent patient care.
