The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research has released its fiscal year 2024 rankings of U.S. institutions and departments in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant funding.
Our department earned the #6 spot among all NIH-funded anesthesiology departments in the nation, up from #15 in 2023. This remarkable achievement highlights our department’s unwavering dedication to pioneering research and clinical excellence. In FY 2024, we received over $10 million in NIH funding—the highest total in our history. Importantly, our NIH funding is focused on anesthesiology-specific research with no incorporation of critical care medicine research.
In addition to our department’s collective success, Senthil Sadhasivam, MD, MPH, MBA, FASA, achieved a prestigious individual honor, ranking #4 among NIH-funded PhD and MD anesthesiology investigators nationwide, with $4.489 million in funding for his contact PI grants alone. Dr. Sadhasivam is the most NIH-funded practicing anesthesiologist in the nation, with more than $5 million in funding in addition to his contact PI NIH grants, including his MPI R01 grant with department faculty member Jacques E. Chelly, MD, PhD, MBA.
The University of Pittsburgh as a whole also excelled, securing the #6 spot among all institutions nationally, while the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine ranked #8 among all medical schools.
Congratulations and gratitude are extended to our exceptional research faculty, as well as their supportive research teams and the dedicated administrative staff. Your hard work and innovation have brought this prestigious recognition to our department—thank you! We are committed to building upon this great momentum and research excellence in 2025 despite NIH funding delays and possible budget cuts.
