The UPMC Passavant Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Council presented the UPMC APP Academy on August 27-28, 2021 at the Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER) at UPMC Passavant. The multi-specialty course was designed for currently practicing APPs looking to enhance leadership, clinical, and procedural skills. Both virtual and in-person didactic sessions were offered, as well as a day of in-person skill building and a chance to join representatives from the Katz Executive MBA in Healthcare to hear how their students are building their business acumen to meet the challenges of health care.
Several members of our department participated in the academy. Allison Lewis, MBA, MSN, CRNA, Clinical Director of Nurse Anesthesia at Passavant and Vice Chair of the UPMC Passavant APP Council, and Megan Tomaino, MPAS, PA-C, Senior Physician Assistant with UPMC Passavant Anesthesiology, served as two of the course directors. Course faculty included Stephen A. Esper, MD, MBA (Assistant Professor and Medical Director, UPMC Centers for Perioperative Care); Francis X. Feld, DNP, LAT, NRP, CRNA (nurse anesthetist, UPMC Passavant); and Hoa Kevin Luong PA-C, MBA (Physician Assistant, Supervisor with UPMC Mercy Anesthesiology / Chronic Pain).
