Community Care in Action: Magee Anesthesia Cares Donates to Red Door

A nun and a man stand in a room filled with shelves stacked with folded clothing. They are both smiling and holding clear plastic bags containing care package items, such as snacks and hygiene products. The nun’s bag has a handwritten note that reads “HAPPY.” In front of them is a large cardboard box labeled “Cara Cara Oranges,” filled with more care packages. The setting appears to be a donation or volunteer center, where supplies are being prepared for distribution.

The Magee Anesthesia Cares (MAC) committee, a compassionate group of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, recently organized a community service initiative to support Red Door, a ministry that provides essential resources to individuals in need in downtown Pittsburgh.

Red Door offers meals, food pantry items, clothing, blankets, tents, personal hygiene products, showers, and laundry services to those experiencing homelessness. To assist in this mission, MAC assembled 55 spring kits filled with essential supplies, including:

  • Weather protection: Ponchos to stay dry
  • Warmth: Hot hands warmers
  • Personal care: Chapstick, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, Band-Aids, and first aid kits
  • Oral hygiene: Toothbrushes
  • Additional support: Individually packed Tide Pods and large packs of feminine hygiene products
  • Personalized encouragement: Handwritten cards from volunteers and children of MAC members

This meaningful project was made possible by the generosity and efforts of the following Magee CRNAs:

  • Serafina M. Bear, MSN, CRNAA group of four children sit on the floor of a room with a carpeted floor and wooden furniture. They are behind several boxes and reusable bags filled with assembled care packages in plastic bags. The child in the center, wearing a green long-sleeve shirt, has arms outstretched with a big smile. The child on the left, wearing glasses and a dark hoodie, sits with legs crossed, smiling gently. The other two children, one in a dark gray shirt and the other in a blue shirt, also smile at the camera. The care packages appear to contain snacks and hygiene items, and the setting suggests a volunteer effort.
  • Elizabeth Chang, DNP, CRNA

  • Susan B. Favorite, MHS, CRNA
  • Thomas M. Janczewski, CRNA
  • Donna Koleck, MHS, CRNA
  • Jacqueline L. Miller, MSN, CRNA
