We’re excited to shine a light on Dee’s inspiring journey, her professional and personal accomplishments, and the passions that drive her. Let’s dive into her story with the Q&A below!
Where are you from?
The City of Champions! Pittsburgh is my hometown, and I still live in the house that I grew up in!
Tell us briefly about your job/role in the dept.
I am the go-to person for anything and everything. I work hand-in-hand with our hospital partners at UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside, so on any given day I could be entering the monthly call schedule, planning a conference, assisting with provider credentialing, on-boarding new-hires, filling in at the front desk, making changes to Epic templates, assisting with building maintenance, coordinating facility renovations, ordering lab coats, scheduling meetings and interviews, updating forms and lists, maintaining email distribution lists, serving as a parking liaison, or working on expense reports, appointment cards, and payroll adjustment forms.
Who or what inspires you, and why?
My mother, Rose, went from being a stay-at-home mom to being the only breadwinner in an instant when my father became disabled. At 50 years old, she had to go back to work, with three little kids and a sick husband at home, and she had to learn to drive at the same time. She did what she had to do, and that’s how I go through life…do what you have to do. She taught Nike what it means to “Just Do It!”
What has been your proudest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
I was so proud to win the ACES award this year. Receiving the award meant a lot to me personally and showed that our work has a direct impact on the people and communities we serve.
What has been your proudest personal accomplishment?
Never giving up on finding the love of my life. Fourteen years ago, I went on a blind date and found Jim waiting for me. He has opened so many new doors for me, so never give up on finding your special person! They may be just around the corner!
Who have been your most significant mentors throughout your career and/or life and why?
Most of my mentors have been strong women and there are too many to list, both personally and professionally. I thank them all for giving me the courage to speak up and be the passionate individual that I am. They showed me that it’s okay to stand up for yourself and others.
Are there any professional or personal skills you’re currently working on that you can tell us about?
I am very interested in AI and learning all about Microsoft Copilot and how it can improve my work and personal life. I really enjoy cooking and baking and finding great new recipes to try out. Cooking is my love language, and it’s a great way to express your creativity.
What might the department be surprised to know about you?
My husband and I are adrenaline junkies. We love to race cars, ride motorcycles, and jump out of airplanes. Our favorite thing to do is paranormal investigating, and we wrote a book (with 5 star reviews) about some of our investigations called, Weird...Spooky...Bizarre: Investigating the Unknown, available from Amazon. We are currently writing the sequel. Another interesting fact about me is that, before I came to UPMC, I was a professional industrial photographer.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love doing anything with my husband. We have fun doing even mundane things. It’s always an adventure! When we got married, I became a stepmom and Mi Mi, and I love every minute of it. We love to spend time visiting with them in Michigan and traveling to places on our bucket lists. Italy is up next!
How do you balance your work and personal life?
When I punch out, I try to leave everything at my desk. My personal time is my personal time. Life is short and I want to enjoy every minute of it both at home and at work. My co-workers are so awesome, and they make me want to come to work.
What advice would you give to new administrative staff joining our department?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions…you don’t know what you don’t know. Never stop learning and don’t be afraid of making a mistake. Mistakes are the best way to learn.
