Chosen as one of the top 64 scientific innovations of 2018, a mobile app developed by Ajay D. Wasan, MD, MSc and Charles Jonassaint, PhD, MHS (Department of Medicine) with others at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University is competing in STAT Madness.

Their prototype mobile app measures pain, using abstract animations to depict “throbbing,” “stabbing,” and other symptoms. Users specify painful body parts, then move an intensity slider to change the animations’ color, speed, or other features to match their experiences. Early tests suggest that the tool could be informative for doctors and easy for patients to use.

STAT Madness is a bracket-style tournament where the best innovations in science and medicine compete to win via online votes.
