Nicole R. Nowe, MSN, CRNANicole R. Nowe, MSN, CRNA, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, has been honored with UPMC’s “Extra Mile” Award for the second quarter within Physician Services. This award recognizes individuals who consistently go above and beyond their job responsibilities, maintain high morale in the workplace, and exemplify UPMC’s core values.

Nomination Highlights

Nicole’s colleagues describe her as an exceptionally talented, highly motivated, and dedicated CRNA who consistently demonstrates excellence across multiple specialties, including obstetrics (OB), pediatrics, and trauma. Her versatility is evident as she provides anesthesia at several UPMC facilities, including Magee, Presbyterian, Children’s, and Shadyside. As an expert-level clinician on the career ladder, Nicole leverages her extensive experience to mentor student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), offering invaluable guidance and fostering their growth.

Her commitment to improving anesthesia delivery techniques extends beyond her own practice. Nicole is a true team player, always willing to step in to ensure smooth operations across UPMC’s facilities. Whether it’s adjusting her schedule or stepping in when needed, she consistently exemplifies the spirit of teamwork and dedication.

Nicole’s impact on the nurse anesthesia profession is far-reaching. Her exceptional mentoring skills were recognized by the University of Pittsburgh’s SRNA graduating class of 2022, who named her "Clinical Instructor of the Year." The students praised her positivity, energy, attention to detail, kindness, and patience. In addition to her precepting role, Nicole serves as one of the OB clinical coordinators for SRNAs at Magee and previously held the same role at St. Margaret. She also contributes to the ongoing education of her colleagues, presenting on topics such as malignant hyperthermia (MH) for annual competencies and recently introducing a hybrid model that includes a simulated MH crisis.

In 2022, Nicole was among the first CRNAs to participate in a pioneering fertility treatment for men at the Center for Reproduction and Transplantation, where she operates within a medically supervised model. Additionally, she serves as the department representative for the Code Response Team and is deeply involved in OB-related education and committees. She instructs an OB Critical Scenario Course at the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER) and co-chairs the Committee on OB Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, where her extensive OB knowledge has been instrumental.

Nicole’s colleagues and friends speak highly of her, with one nominator expressing, “Nicole is quite a special lady and a friend. I feel so honored to have worked alongside her for multiple years. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Nicole!”

Congratulations to Nicole for this well-deserved recognition of her contributions to UPMC and her commitment to excellence in patient care and professional development.
