The eagerly awaited first edition of The Pain Procedure Handbook: A Milestones Approach (2023) has been officially released. The book was edited by three distinguished Pain Management faculty members from our department - Trent D. Emerick, MD, MBA, FASA; Scott A. Brancolini, MD, MPH; and Ajay D. Wasan, MD, MSc - with the valuable contributions of Michael E. Farrell II, MD, a former UPMC Pain Medicine Fellow now working with Erie County Medical Center Corporation.
Representing an unparalleled collaboration within UPMC Pain Management, this textbook stands as the division’s most extensive endeavor to date, encapsulating the efforts of faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students over an exhaustive four-year period. Every element of the textbook, from written content to images, was meticulously crafted in-house with the active involvement of over 25 trainees. Many of these contributions originated from our annual UPMC Pain Medicine Fellow and Resident Research Meeting, underlining the division’s commitment to fostering a collaborative learning environment.
The Pain Procedure Handbook provides a unique resource for trainees seeking mastery in the intricate realm of pain procedures. This practical, concise, and succinct publication targets medical students, residents, fellows, and physicians vested in chronic pain medicine, anesthesiology, acute pain medicine, interventional radiology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
