Robert C. Stough, MD, a pediatric anesthesiologist who served as a faculty member in our department from 2006 to 2014, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021.
Before starting his academic career, Dr. Stough was a member of the United States Army, serving throughout Vietnam from 1968 through 1970 and earning several prestigious military awards - the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, the U.S. Army Bronze Star, and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Bronze Star with Gold Palm.
Dr. Stough received a BS in chemistry and his MD from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed residencies in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and anesthesiology at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was co-chief resident. He later completed a residency in family medicine at Carilion/Roanoke Memorial Hospital, University of Virginia.
After working as a physician at numerous hospitals for over 20 years, including West Virginia University where he served as Acting Vice-Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology from 2004-2006, he joined our department as a faculty physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he was the Director of Radiologic Anesthesiology and Director of Pediatric Transplantation. From 2008 – 2009, he was also Director of Pediatric Transplantation Anesthesiology and Pediatric Intensive Care Management at IsMeTT (UPMC’s hospital in Palermo, Sicily).
