Congratulations to Monica A. Bolland, MD, who has been appointed Chief of Anesthesiology at UPMC Mercy, effective August 1, 2019.
After graduating on the Dean’s List with her bachelor’s degree from Smith College, Dr. Bolland earned her MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed a transitional internship at West Penn Hospital. After finishing her anesthesiology residency training at UPMC in 2006, she joined the faculty of our department as a Clinical Instructor and Staff Anesthesiologist at UPMC South Side and East. In 2009, she was promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor. She graduated from the Marshall A. Webster Physician Leadership Course, University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business in 2018.
Dr. Bolland will step into the Chief role at Mercy after serving as Vice Chief of Anesthesiology at UPMC East since 2015. She brings with her extensive experience in anesthesiology practice management and OR operations. Dr. Bolland has also developed a strong interest in perioperative quality improvement (QI). At East, she served as a QI Physician Leader since 2013 and served on the UPMC East and UPMC Mercy South Side Outpatient Surgery Center Professional Practices Committee from 2012 to 2016. Dr. Bolland has also been engaged in many education initiatives in our department; she participated in QI and patient safety course development for the residency program last year and has served as a course facilitator and lecturer for clinical staff and residents and on various department graduate medical education committees throughout her faculty appointment.
