We are pleased to announce Grace Lim, MD, MS, has been approved for a $100,000 funding award through the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Program, an initiative of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
The funds will support Dr. Lim’s project, “Elevating Anesthesia Choices for Cesarean Delivery: A Roadmap to Patient-Centered Research (ELEVATE).” The project will engage and convene stakeholders to create a patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) agenda to enhance anesthesia choices during cesarean deliveries.
The ELEVATE project will unfold in various locations, including virtual platforms for meetings and a national summit. By engaging diverse stakeholders, ELEVATE will define key comparators and patient-centered outcomes, create a comprehensive research agenda, and identify barriers and promoters. Patient engagement is central to the project, ensuring that the developed solutions reflect lived experiences and preferences.
Dr. Lim expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “This award provides a unique opportunity to truly listen to and learn from patients and engage in a bi-directional conversation with providers about areas where future research can help improve anesthesia choice during cesarean delivery. Up until now, most research on this topic has emphasized clinician-defined outcomes and interventions, at the potential omission of patient perspectives. By focusing on patient experiences and preferences, we can develop more effective and personalized anesthesia options for cesarean deliveries. Our goal is to ensure every patient is heard and has access to the best possible care tailored to their needs.”

ELEVATE is part of a portfolio of projects that PCORI has funded to help develop a community of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other stakeholders who are better equipped to engage as partners in all phases of patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research and to disseminate PCORI-funded study results. Through its Engagement Award Program, PCORI is creating an expansive network of individuals, communities, and organizations who can leverage their lived experience and expertise to influence research to be more patient-centered, relevant, and useful.
According to Greg Martin, PCORI’s Chief of Engagement, Dissemination, and Implementation, “This project was selected for Engagement Award funding because it will build a community equipped to engage as partners in patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research. We look forward to working with Dr. Lim throughout the course of her 12-month project.”
Dr. Lim’s project and other projects approved for funding through the PCORI Engagement Award Program were selected as part of a highly competitive review process in which applications were assessed for their ability to meet PCORI’s engagement goals and objectives, as well as program criteria.
